Realistic art is beautiful in that someone is able to duplicate on paper or canvas what we
see in reality. I believe when we veer from that realistic place that is truly when art becomes
interesting. For a moment you have escaped into a place that only exists in the mind and in
the soul. My work begins with only a starting shape and color. I crank up the music and
escape to another place in my mind. The titles for my art come from the thought that is most
prevalent with me while painting that piece. I hope you too find your own place of escape
in my artwork.
I'm not sure if anyone really chooses to become an artist. I like to believe rather that Art
chooses you. It doesn't matter what path in life I would have chosen I truly believe Art would
have followed me like my shadow forever. I see it in everything.
Background and History:
Painting was introduced to me at age 10 by my Grandmother in the back of a small town art studio. We went once a week
during the summer to art classes where she and I both worked on Oil Painting together. My Grandmother worked in the
60's part-time coloring Black and White Photography. Color blending and shading seemed to come naturally to me and so
each week I would choose a Sea Scape to paint. I would have happily painted the blue and turquoise ocean water over the
entire canvas. We had not heard of Abstract Art at that time and to paint an entire canvas blue and turquoise would have been
considered a waste of money.
During High School I switched to Pencil drawing and I eventually was able to reproduce a Photo realistically, almost like
a photo copy. I went on to receive my professional degree from The Art Institute of Dallas which focused predominantly
in Graphic Design. For me, being an Artist is a journey; and I continually grow and evolve along my path. After several
years in the Commercial Art industry I desired to get back to my roots with art. By using the same design principles I had
used in Graphic Design I began to create abstract works of art with acrylic paint on canvas. It is a great asset to be able to
use art in so many ways because one medium feeds the other in color, shape, and innovation.
